Dubai has one of the most active fitness communities in the world. Between the gyms, outdoor running tracks, yoga studios, padel courts and sports clubs across the city, sportswear gets a serious amount of use — and like any clothing, activewear needs to fit properly to perform properly.
The problem is that sportswear sizing is at least as inconsistent as regular clothing sizing, and often more so. Leggings that are the right waist but too long. A sports jacket with sleeves that are too short. A gym set where the top fits but the shorts sit awkwardly — performance clothing you have invested in and want to actually wear.
At Dr. Alter, we handle sportswear and activewear alterations for Dubai’s fitness community. We work with stretch fabrics, technical materials, compression wear and performance textiles, using the right techniques for each fabric type — regular sewing methods do not work on stretch fabrics. All alterations are performed under our ISO 9001:2015 certified quality management system, Dubai’s first certified tailor. Certificate No: 060705AO12DR.
What we do
From a single hem to a full waistband rebuild — if it’s stretch, technical or performance fabric, we have a stitch method for it.
01
Leggings that are too long are one of the most common sportswear requests. We shorten them using a stitch that maintains stretch so the hem does not pull, crack or restrict movement. From AED 45.
02
Shorts that sit too long or too wide in the leg are shortened or adjusted at the side seam. We maintain the original hem style and stretch finish wherever possible.
03
Sleeves on athletic jackets, hoodies and track tops that are too long are shortened using a stitch suitable for the fabric type. From AED 60.
04
Taking in the body of a sports jacket or windbreaker that is too wide, done at the side seams with a stretch-appropriate finish.
05
Shorts, leggings and athletic trousers where the waistband is too loose or tight. A more involved alteration, depending on garment construction.
06
Broken or stuck zips on sports jackets, hoodies, gym bags and athletic wear are replaced. From AED 50.
07
Sports bra straps and athletic top straps that sit incorrectly are adjusted for a more comfortable and functional fit.
08
Running tights, cycling shorts and performance bottoms adjusted for length and waist fit.
09
Swimsuit strap adjustment, waistband tightening and minor repairs. Assessed individually as swimwear construction varies significantly.
A Note on Fabric
Stretch and technical fabrics require different treatment from woven fabrics. Regular straight stitching breaks when the fabric stretches, which is why sportswear alterations need to be done by someone who understands this. At Dr. Alter we use stretch-appropriate stitch types and finishing techniques that keep the alteration functional through movement and washing.
We assess each garment individually before committing to the alteration. If the fabric or construction makes a clean, durable result unlikely, we will tell you before you leave the garment with us.
How it works
Bring your sportswear to any Dr. Alter location. If hemming is involved, bring the footwear you plan to wear with the garment.
Try the garment on in our fitting area. Our tailor assesses the fit while you are wearing it, including how it sits during movement where relevant.
We confirm what can be done and give you a clear price before starting the alterations.
Leave the garment with us. Most sportswear alterations are ready within one to two business days.
Collect your completed garment and enjoy a fit that is ready for your next activity.
Why It Matters
Every alteration at Dr. Alter is carried out under an independently audited ISO 9001:2015 quality management system — the first of its kind for a tailoring service in Dubai. Certificate No: 060705AO12DR.

Yes. We use a stitch type designed for stretch fabrics that maintains the elasticity of the hem. A regular straight stitch on leggings would break the first time the fabric stretches, so this is an important distinction. Our tailors use the right technique for every stretch fabric.
Leggings hemming starts from AED 45. Sports jacket sleeve shortening from AED 60. Zip repair from AED 50. Exact pricing is confirmed after the tailor assesses the garment, as sportswear construction varies significantly between brands and styles.
Yes. We work with activewear from all brands. The approach depends on the fabric and construction of the specific garment rather than the brand name. We assess each piece individually and tell you what is possible.
Yes, where the seam construction allows. Some technical fabrics have seam tape or bonded seams that make alteration more complex. Your tailor will assess this and let you know before starting.
For simple hemming on standard stretch fabrics, same day may be possible if dropped before noon. Call ahead to confirm: +971 50 861 6508.
Yes. Seam repairs on activewear are done using a stretch-appropriate stitch that holds under movement. From AED 40.
