Prom and graduation is one of the biggest nights of the year for students at Dubai’s international schools. The dress has been chosen carefully, the photos matter, and feeling confident walking in is the whole point. A dress that does not quite fit makes all of that harder than it needs to be.
The problem is that prom and graduation dresses are usually bought in standard sizes, often from online retailers, and they arrive needing adjustment — the hem sits at the wrong length, the waist needs taking in, the straps are too long. These are all fixable problems, and fixing them makes an enormous difference to how the dress looks and how the person wearing it feels.
At Dr. Alter, we handle prom and graduation dress alterations throughout Dubai’s school season. Every fitting is done with the dress on, by a tailor who understands how much the night matters.

Hem Shortening
The most common prom dress alteration. Floor-length gowns that are too long are shortened to sit correctly with the shoes being worn on the night. We work with plain, curved, layered, chiffon and beaded hems. Bring your prom shoes to this appointment. From AED 80.

Waist Taking In
A dress that fits at the hips but is loose at the waist is taken in at the side seams for a cleaner, more flattering silhouette. From AED 90.

Strap Shortening
Straps that are too long cause the whole dress to sit lower than intended. Shortening lifts the neckline and improves the bodice fit. From AED 50.

Bust Adjustment
A bodice that gaps or pulls across the bust is adjusted to fit the actual measurement of the person wearing it. From AED 100.

Zip Repair
A broken or stiff zip on a prom dress needs to be fixed before the night. We repair and replace all zip types on formal gowns. From AED 60.

Corset and Lacing Adjustment
Dresses with corset backs and lacing systems are adjusted for the right fit and the right level of comfort for a long evening.

Split and Slit Adjustment
Splits that sit higher than comfortable are sewn partially closed. Dresses needing a new split are assessed individually.

Emergency Repairs
A tear, a popped seam, a detached embellishment or a broken strap close to prom night. Call us immediately and we will do everything possible to help.

The best time to bring your dress in. Enough time for a proper fitting, the alteration work, and a follow-up check if needed.

Workable for most standard alterations — hems, waist and strap adjustments.

Tight but manageable for simple hems and strap adjustments.

Call us first. We will be straight with you about what is realistic before you come in.
For Parents Bringing Their Child
Most of our prom dress customers are young women coming in with a parent or friend. We understand the occasion is significant and we approach every appointment with that in mind — there is no rush during the fitting.
The person who will be wearing the dress needs to attend the fitting appointment, as the dress cannot be pinned accurately without them in it. Bring the shoes, any shapewear being worn underneath, and ideally have hair up or down the way it will be on the night, as this affects how the neckline and straps sit.

Book Your Fitting
Call ahead to arrange a fitting appointment, especially during the busy prom season months of May, June and November: +971 50 861 6508 . Walk-ins are also welcome, but calling ahead is recommended.
Bring Everything You’ll Wear
Come to any Dr. Alter location with the dress, the shoes and anything you will be wearing underneath the dress.
Try It On & Get Fitted
Try the dress on in our fitting area. Our tailor marks every adjustment while you are wearing it.
Receive Your Quote
We give you a clear, itemised quote along with a realistic collection timeline.
Leave the Dress With Us
Once you are happy with the alterations and timeline, leave the dress with our tailoring team.
Check Fitting
If needed, we arrange a check fitting before final collection to make sure the adjustments are right.
Collect Your Dress
Collect your completed dress, professionally fitted and ready for the night.
